RECAP
- Dr. Malcolm Jones was born in Atlanta and is a first-generation student of Liberian parents. He attended boarding school starting in the 6th grade, which was a transformative experience that allowed him to be his authentic self.
- Initially, Dr. Jones was on track to become an orthopedic surgeon, but after suffering a coma, decided to switch his focus to research.
- He double-majored in visual arts, positioning himself at the intersection of technology and the arts.
- Dr. Jones graduated from USC, and made history as the first Black graduate in 2023.
- After his graduate studies, he joined the Iovine and Young Academy.
- Dr. Jones was instrumental in designing the academy to be a hub for learning technology, design, and business, bridging the gap between technology and innovation. The academy's lessons are paired with real-life, actionable challenges.
- Recently, Nike approached the academy for help in identifying ways to highlight women’s sports around the Olympics.
- Together with his students, Dr. Jones brainstormed and developed solutions for Nike, emphasizing the importance of not merely adapting men's items for women but creating unique highlights for women's sports.
- According to Dr. Jones, a successful project involves thorough research and presenting it in a manner that captures the audience's attention.
- He founded and directs the Flight Lab, where he applies biomechanic and physiological knowledge to aid Jumpman enthusiasts and athletes.
- Dr. Jones sees a significant gap between academia and the arts, noting that there's little crossover, which can hinder growth and innovation.
- He points out that academics typically only communicate with other academics, and creatives do the same within their circles.
- The Iovine and Young Academy strives to support individuals with innovative ideas, much like Galileo and Nikola Tesla, who were unfortunately not recognized for their contributions until after their death.
